The Great Sunnah of the Hijama

Few Muslims still practise the Prophet's highlighted sunnah of "WET-cupping," Hijama.
Prophet Adam is the originator of this form of healing.

According to Abdullâh ibn Abbâs, the Prophet said:

Three practises include healing: cupping, honey consumption, and fire cauterization. However, I encourage my Ummah to forgo using fire to cauterise wounds. (Ibn Mâjah - 3491, Bukari - 5681, and Amed)

According to Abû Huraira, the Messenger said:

Cupping (Hijâma) is a great treatment that can be employed, according to Abû Dâwûd, Ibn Mâjah, Amed, and Al-âkim.

According to Abdullâh ibn Abbâs, the Messenger said

On the Night Journey (Al-Isrâ' wa Al-Mirâj), I didn't come across any angels, but they all addressed me as Muhammad and said, "Order your nation to cupping (ijâma)." (Tirmidhi and Al-Khattab. Al-Albâni rated it as "ai" in his "ai" Al-Targhîb (3/352).

In wet cupping, hair-fine incisions are made in the flesh after the cups have been removed from the initial suction. The cup is then reintroduced, and a vacuum is generated once more. Through the cuts, toxins and "old blood" are spilled into the cup. The treatment is finished after some time has passed with the disposal of the blood and cleaning of the area. Toxins and hazardous substances are expelled instantly in this method, which is ultimately healthiest for the internal organs and safer for women, such as nursing moms, as toxins can be discharged into breast milk.

Hijâma is also fairly painless, barring sir or ayn, and even then the discomfort is bearable. Sir and Ayn leave a physical impurity in the body that needs to be expelled, just like any other sickness. We are all familiar with the hadith that the Prophet (saws) recited the âyât of Sûrat Al-Falaq for ruqya while he was suffering from sir. Although many of us are unaware of it, Ibn Al Qayyim wrote in his book Zâd Al-Maâd that the Prophet of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was cupped on the top of his head when he was suffering from sir (witchcraft), and that if it is done properly, it is one of the best treatments for this condition.

When sir or ayn occurs, unusual patterns on the cups are frequently left behind. These marks frequently resemble symbols or shapes and are really bizarre to observe. Ijâma is one of the most effective therapies for these problems since the jinn don't like feeling pain, which is common in cases of possession or the attachment of a jinn to a human. However, one should proceed with caution as the jinn occasionally results in nausea or brief paralysis.

According to academics who have published on the subject, ijâma is prioritised for those who live in hot areas. The Prophet pronounced:

Do not let your blood boil to the point of killing.

Benefits of Hijama mentioned in Islam:

Many benefits of Hijama Therapy are mentioned in the Sunnah of Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Not only did the Prophet use Hijama Therapy for specific ailments, he also promoted it for overall health and as a preventative measure.

Below are some narrations of the Prophets (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) mentioning the benefits of using Hijama Therapy:

Narrated Ibn Abbas: That the Messenger of Allahs was treated with Cupping on his head while he was in ihram due to a migraine that he had. (Sahih Al-Bukhari 5701)

Narrated Jabir (radiyallahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) fell off from his horse onto a trunk (of a tree), so his foot became dislocated. Waki’ said: meaning that the Prophet was treated with Cupping on it because of a contusion. (Sunan ibn Majah 3485)

Narrated Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: Whoever wants to be treated with Cupping let him search for the 17th or the 19th or the 21st. And do not let your blood become hyperaemic (becomes excessive/boil/rage) so that it kills you. (Sunan ibn Majah 3486)

Narrated Salma (radiyallahu anhaa), the servant of the messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam): There was no one who complained to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) of a headache except he would say to him: Get treated with Cupping. And neither a pain in the legs except he would say: dye them (with Henna). (Sunan Abu Dawud 3858)

Narrated Jabir (radiyallahu anhu) when he returned to Muqanna’ he said: I will not leave until to treat yourself with Cupping. For indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) saying: Indeed there is a cure in it (in Cupping). (Sahih Muslim 2205)

Best days to have Hijama Therapy:

The best and most beneficial days to have hijama performed, also commonly known as the 'Sunnah Days' are the 17th, 19th or 21st of the Islamic (Lunar) month which fall on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.

Taking into consideration that in Islam the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in and so on.

Hijama Therapy is more beneficial when perfomed during the daytime between fajr and maghrib.

If you are not able to be cupped on the Sunnah days then the closest Monday, Tuesday or Thursday to the Sunnah Days are the next best days. Likewise, if there are no Sunnah days in a month, then the closest Monday, Tuesday or Thursday to the 17th, 19th, and 21st days of that month. If not, then on any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Below are some narrations of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) mentioning the best time to have Hijma performed:

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiyallahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: Whoever gets treated with Cupping on the 17th and 19th and the 21st will be cured from every illness. (Sunan Abu Dawud 3861)

Practitioners say that the benefits of Hijama are many, among them detoxification of blood, stimulation of new blood formation, relieves Inflammation ad congestion. “As we age, we suffer from increased accumulation of toxins, stemming from poor diet and lifestyle, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals in our fruits, vegetables and meat, environmental pollutants and chemicals,”
